Dear Prussing families,

In light of national events that have brought increased attention to the issue of water quality, the City of Chicago announced several additional precautionary measures that will be added to the City’s water testing protocol, continuing the City’s track record of complying with current state and federal regulations as well as exceeding industry standards. As part of this announcement, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) began testing the water for levels of lead from all schools across the district. Our top priority is the health and safety of our students and staff, and this testing was initiated out of an abundance of caution to ensure the water in our schools is safe. Schools are being tested based on a priority criteria that includes the age of the school, age of the students (with priority given to schools with pre-K programs), presence of a kitchen (where meals are prepared) and presence of pipes that could need repairs or replacement. The results of all the schools are coming in on a rolling basis, and the majority have had levels under the EPA’s action level of 15 parts per billion (ppb). At Prussing samples were tested from 15 sites and the water sampled from one sink was above the action level of 15 ppb: A sink on the first floor read at 16.7 ppb. The water from the sink has been turned off and remediation plans are being created. Chicago’s water supply is free of lead when it leaves the treatment plant. However, lead can be found in some interior plumbing fixtures and materials, and lead found in tap water usually comes from the corrosion of these items. This explains why only one of the samples at Prussing returned with elevated results – the issue is not system-wide, but is specific to the fixtures or pipes for that sink and will be addressed though the remediation plan. The full results of every school’s water samples can be found online at cps.edu/leadtesting. Federal guidance indicates that children under the age of six are at the highest risk for harmful lead exposure, and they can be exposed to lead from a variety of sources, including paint, soil and even some consumer products. If you are concerned about your child’s possible lead exposure risks, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) recommends going to your pediatrician or one of the local health care providers listed in the attachment for testing. Additionally, CDPH’s lead hotline can address any health related questions you may have or help you in deciding whether to have your child tested; for questions or more information, please call 312-747-5323. For additional information about lead and children, visit www.cdc.gov/lead. The safety of your children is our highest priority, and we are doing everything in our power to address this situation in a quick and thorough manner. We will continue to keep you and your family informed throughout this process.

Sincerely,

Forrest Claypool, CEO, Chicago Public Schools

July 1, 2016

Dear Prussing Families,

I hope you’re all enjoying the start of the summer break -- and that this note might make it even better.

Today, after months of negotiation and advocacy, our elected leaders in Springfield passed legislation that provides additional funding for our schools next year, and builds a foundation for finalizing education funding reforms in the coming year.

This is an exciting moment for our district, and for Prussing School.  The bills voted on today provide more than $600 million to CPS, which means we can open school on time in the fall, and better protect our classrooms in the year ahead.

Your support played a crucial role in making today a reality, and I want to thank you for all you’ve done over the past year.  Despite the challenges, you’ve played an active role in our school community, showing up and speaking out; sending a loud and clear message for reform to Springfield, and showcasing our students’ accomplishments to demonstrate this is a school system worth investing in. Thank you.

So what happens now?

Next week I’ll learn more about the budgeting process for next school year, and I’ll be sure to keep you updated as that process gets underway.  The additional funding from Springfield will do so much to protect our classrooms, but it’s worth remembering that it does not entirely close our $1 billion deficit. As we work towards a balanced budget, strict spending policies will still be enforced and some strategic cuts will still need to be made.

Finally, I want to make sure you knew that today the district made this year’s pension payment to the Chicago Teachers Pension Fund, for a total of $676 million.  While fulfilling the responsibility to our teachers who’ve earned their pension was never in question, we are glad that despite our fiscal challenges we were able to make this payment -- and even more pleased to know that today’s actions in Springfield could mean this is the last payment we make as the only school district that receives almost no help from the State.

We took a big step forward today.  Not only am I more confident about the ability to provide for our students in the year ahead, but I know this momentum will help us continue our fight for permanent funding equality this fall.

Thank you once again for all you’ve done, and hope you have a wonderful July 4th weekend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Chipain

Day of Action for Equitable Funding Thursday, May 26th

Dear Prussing Families,

Without action in Springfield, classrooms from Rockford to East St. Louis are at risk. We need action now! Join us in the State Capital to support our legislators as they work to find a solution. Stand with parents, students, community leaders, and elected officials to support equitable education funding. There will be a  Day of Action for Equitable Funding on Thursday, May 26th at 12:00 PM at the State Capitol Rotunda in Springfield, IL. Buses will depart from Chicago at 7:00 a.m. and there will be two staging areas for Thursday's Springfield trip: 1. Taft High School and 2. Roosevelt High School. We need your help. If you are able to go to Springfield on Thursday, please RSVP today at www.cps.edu/Springfield. Be sure to show off your school pride by wearing your school colors!

Also, there will be a Budget Town Hall Meeting tonight, May 24th, at 7:00 p.m. at Taft High School to discuss budget concerns for the 2016 - 2017 school year. Please come if you are able to attend.

Although the release of school budgets have been delayed, CPS has shared that schools can expect a reduction in funds/services that  will drastically impact how schools are staffed and run in the fall. While we don’t have next year’s actual budget, such drastic cuts will result in the loss of  many teaching positions (general, bilingual, special education, specials), specialty programs, after school classes, and support personnel. I encourage you to  pickup the phone and make some very important calls. Listed below are phone numbers and a simple script to aid you in this process. The person answering the phone will merely take down your name, address and your position. It will literally take you just a minute per call, but your position will be noted, and that’s what can make the difference!

Suggested Message For Your Calls
I am a parent of a student that attends Prussing Elementary School in Chicago. Please, pass a budget that supports Chicago Public Schools with full funding.   At Prussing, we are looking at losing many teachers, support staff, and specialty programming. We cannot function as a school with these devastating cuts.

Please see the letter below from Mr. Forrest Claypool, CEO of the Chicago Public Schools:

Dear CPS families,

In light of national events that have brought increased attention to the issue of water quality, the City of Chicago announced several additional precautionary measures that will be added to the City’s water testing protocol, continuing the City’s track record of exceeding current state and federal regulations as well as industry standards. As part of this announcement, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) began a pilot program to test water at 28 schools to help develop a standard approach for testing across the district. Our top priority is the health and safety of our students and staff, and this pilot was initiated out of an abundance of caution to ensure the water in our schools is safe. The 28 schools were chosen based on criteria that includes the age of the school, age of the students (with priority given to schools with pre-K programs), presence of a kitchen (where meals are prepared) and presence of pipes that could need repairs or replacement. An additional four schools opted to also test their water alongside this pilot program. Suburban Labs, an independent lab, analyzed the water as part of this program. The results of this pilot program (a total of 236 samples) were analyzed, and 31 of the 32 schools had lead levels under the EPA’s action level of 15 parts per billion (ppb). The full results of the pilot program’s tests will be available online at cps.edu/leadtesting. As a result of the pilot program, all CPS schools will be tested out of an abundance of caution, with schools that have younger children and older buildings tested first. Federal guidance indicates that children under the age of six are at the highest risk for harmful lead exposure, and they can be exposed to lead from a variety of sources, including paint, soil and even some consumer products. If you are concerned about your child, please contact your child’s physician or another medical provider who can administer a blood test. The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH)’s lead hotline can address any health related questions you may have; for questions or more information, please call 312-747-5323. For additional information about lead and children, visit www.cdc.gov/lead. The safety of your children is our highest priority, and we are doing everything in our power to address this situation in a quick and thorough manner. We will continue to keep you and your family informed throughout this process.

Sincerely,

Forrest Claypool - CEO, Chicago Public Schools

Why You Should Be On The PTO

We have a wonderful community of parents, teachers and staff at Prussing Elementary. This strong partnership helps make our school community the best it can be for our children and our teachers. This year the PTO has raised thousands of dollars. This money has paid for buses for field trips, provided sports jerseys and equipment for after school programs, and materials for classrooms. The PTO has also organized several events including Run-a-thon, Vendor Night, Valentine’s Dance, Talent Show, Fun in the Sun, several Parent’s Nights as well as Prussing Pride Prevails after the boiler incident. In order to serve our school community, we need a dedicated group of committed parents who are willing to volunteer their time and talent. The PTO is seeking those individuals who are interested in taking on this task. On May 18th, the PTO will hold elections for the new PTO board for the 2016-17 school year. Candidates can run for any position. The following is a brief description of the official duties of each position.

Treasurer

The treasurer receives all funds for the organization, keeps an accurate record of receipts and expenditures, and pays out funds in accordance with the approval of the executive board. He or she presents a financial statement at every meeting and at other times of the year when requested by the executive board.

Public Education, the Great Equalizer for Children Everywhere—But Not in Chicago. Chicagoans contribute 20 percent of the state income tax, and CPS students make up 20 percent of the state’s enrollment—but CPS students only receive 15 percent of the state’s funding. The missing 5% is almost $500 million this year alone— enough to save teachers and class sizes. For every $1 students across Illinois get, CPS students only get $0.74. We all work hard to prepare our children for their future— but that future is threatened by Governor Rauner’s education plan, which includes more cuts to CPS. Because of the state’s discriminatory funding system, CPS will have to keep cutting its budget. That means fewer teachers and resources for your child. Discriminating against Chicago’s children and teachers is wrong. Make sure your representatives know that you won’t stand for more cuts to our classrooms. Our students need your voice: take action now. Join the fight for equal funding at cps.edu/equality

Dear CPS Families,

As you may have heard, CPS is now testing water at 28 schools throughout the city. While we have no indication that there is any lead present in water at any of our schools, we created this pilot program as a precautionary measure to ensure proper testing procedures are in place, and that the water in our schools is safe. While your child’s school is not part of this pilot program, the 28 schools chosen to participate are representative of the district overall, with a variety of construction dates, student ages, and the presence of a school kitchen where meals are prepared. Testing at these schools will benefit all CPS students by helping us develop a comprehensive lead testing plan – and results from these tests will be available online in mid-May. Chicago’s water meets or exceeds all industry standards, and that the testing being conducted in schools serves only to strengthen the procedures that protect the safety of our city’s water supply. This testing goes above and beyond state and federal requirements, which do not require any testing in schools. If you have any questions about this testing, please contact your school directly.

Sincerely,

Forrest Claypool

Chief Executive Officer

The safety of your children is among our top priorities, which is why we must inform you of an incident that was reported near our school yesterday afternoon. Please remind your children to walk to and from school in groups whenever possible, and to report any suspicious behavior to the school immediately. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly.

Dear Families,

We’ve written you many times this year with updates about our financial crisis, but this time we’re writing to ask for your help. Last week, Governor Rauner released his proposed education budget for next year, which includes deeper cuts to Chicago schools -- $74 million in cuts. That deep cut comes while he’s giving even more money to wealthy school districts. With a $1 billion budget deficit, our schools face devastating cuts in the fall, unless we can reform the way Springfield funds our schools. Chicago schoolchildren are the victims of blatant discrimination. Chicago students receive just 74 cents for every dollar the rest of the State receives on average, despite being 86 percent low-income and 85 percent minority. That’s not fair. It’s not right. The quality of a child’s education should not be determined by a zip code, by their country of origin or by their race. But that is what this approach does -- and it cannot stand any longer. As the leaders responsible for Chicago’s students, we must take a stand. This is why earlier today we stood with community, religious and school leaders to launch a grassroots effort to demand equal funding. To learn more about the campaign and to take action, please visit cps.edu/equality. Chicago students make up 20 percent of the enrollment in Illinois public schools. Chicagoans contribute 20 percent of the income tax revenue used to fund public education. Yet our children receive just 15 percent of the education funding from Springfield. The missing 5 percent is $500 million this year alone--enough to save our schools. Chicago’s students know this inequity far too well. Even though we’ve done our best to keep cuts away from their classrooms, they still have fewer counselors, fewer after-school programs, old textbooks and crumbling school buildings. These all send a clear message from Springfield: your children are not as important. Your children’s futures are not as valued. Your children can do with less. The State of Illinois is perpetuating two separate and unequal systems of public education – and those with the authority to change this must be held accountable. We’re grateful to elected leaders like Senate President Cullerton and State Senator Andy Manar--who are working toward state funding solutions, but we need to ensure that all of our state legislators understand what’s at stake. Please tell your state representative and state senator to vote NO on Governor Rauner’s budget which includes more damaging cuts to our schools, and to vote NO on any education budget that does not reform our state’s broken funding system. Our district is making dramatic academic progress. In recent years, CPS has achieved record graduation rates, record test scores, record college attendance and graduation - -and we intend to keep making this kind of progress in the classroom. But as we face a $1 billion budget deficit next school year, we know we can’t do that without equal funding for our students from Springfield. Whether it’s making a call, visiting the office of one of your elected officials, or talking with your friends and neighbors about this issue – we need you to make your voices heard. We hope you’ll visit cps.edu/equality to get started today, and thank you for your continued support of our schools.

Sincerely,

Forrest Claypool, Chief Executive Officer

Dear Prusing Families,

Please read the following message from Forrest Claypool and Dr. Janice Jackson:

Dear CPS Families,

The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) leadership voted to go on strike this Friday, April 1, 2016. As we wrote to you last week: though there are teachers who have told us they will be in their classrooms on April 1, due to the undetermined number of staff absences occurring because of this one-day action, CPS will not be operating as we would on a regular school day. Instead, on Friday we will be working with partners to operate more than 250 contingency sites throughout the city. These sites will be supported by trained staff, and will ensure students in attendance are safe, fed, and engaged and will be available for families who are unable to keep their student(s) at home on April 1. If you are unable to keep your child at home or secure alternate care, you can find more information about your options for Friday by using our Student Site Locator, which can be found at cps.edu/April1: • By entering your address, you’ll receive an elementary and high school option for your child, as well as a Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Library site within a similar area. • Of the options provided, simply select the site that works best for you. If you choose a CPS school site, please make sure to register your student(s) for the day using the form provided, and to choose the school that matches your child’s grade level. All sites will provide online learning opportunities, as well as physical education and arts & crafts programming, and all students who attend will receive free breakfast and lunch. To further support families, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will provide free service to all students on April 1. More information on student sites, including hours of operation and resources to plan student travel on public transportation, can be found on cps.edu/April1. For additional assistance with site location and registration please call 311 (the City of Chicago’s information hotline). You can also sign up for regular updates from CPS sent directly to you at cps.edu/signup. This decision to strike on Friday is not only extremely disappointing, but it is against the law. This one-day strike driven by CTU leadership disregards the terms of our continued negotiations with them, and directly interferes with the instructional time that our teachers want to provide, and that our students need to succeed. We know that April 1 presents an inconvenience for our families, and hope that once it’s behind us, the focus can return to reaching a final contract agreement and speaking to our leaders in Springfield with one voice, demanding that they provide Chicago’s children with the equal funding they deserve. Thank you for your continued support as we work to minimize challenges to all of our students.

March 24, 2016

Dear CPS Families,

Last week we wrote to you with preliminary information about Friday, April 1, 2016 - a “Day of Action,” planned by CTU leadership. Unfortunately, a majority of the CTU’s House of Delegates voted to turn this Day of Action into an illegal one-day strike. Today, we’re writing with an update on what this means for your family on April 1, 2016.

While our priority is always to provide a structured learning environment for our students, this one-day strike challenges our ability to do that.

If you have the option of keeping your student(s) at home or attending a non-CPS facility on Friday, April 1, we encourage you to do so.

If that is not possible for your family, CPS will provide an assigned contingency site for students where they will be safe, fed and engaged.

There will be more than 250 sites throughout the city, using a combination of CPS schools, Chicago Park District buildings, and Chicago Public Library branches where students will be supervised by trained staff. Additionally, the Chicago Transit Authority will provide free transportation to all students on April 1. Contingency sites will provide online learning opportunities, as well as physical education and arts and crafts programming, and all students who attend will be provided with free breakfast and lunch.

We will provide a full list of contingency sites and related information on Tuesday, March 29, 2016. For regular updates please sign up for our new mailing list at cps.edu/signup.

Because April 1, 2016 will not be a normal school day, no absence penalties for students will be incurred.

We know this is more than an inconvenience for you, and for the many teachers who simply want to do their job. We do not take lightly what it will mean for your children. However, while we appreciate that some teachers have committed to being in their classrooms, there will be an unknown number of staff absences April 1, which means we cannot operate as we would on a regular school day.

Though this course of action is disappointing, it will not change our commitment to reaching a final contract with CTU leadership. Having already reached a tentative contract agreement in January with CTU leadership, we believe that a final deal is possible -- and that all of our school communities are counting on both sides to come together in a meaningful way for the future of our district.

Thank you for your continued patience and support, and we’ll be in touch on Tuesday.

Sincerely,

Forrest Claypool                                        Dr. Janice K. Jackson

Please read the following letter from Dr. Janice Jackson, Chief Education Officer, Chicago Public Schools

Dear CPS Families,

We are writing to let you know that the testing window for PARCC, which helps us assess how well we’re preparing your children for success in college and career, begins on March 28, 2016. There is a lot of debate these days about the value of standardized tests, so we want you to understand how CPS uses PARCC and why we believe it is critical to yourchild’s education. PARCC is an annual exam that tests the content and skills taught in your student(s) classroom every day. It is aligned to the Common Core State Standards, and will not only provide crucial data to principals and teachers on Math and Literacy skills, but also on problem-solving and critical thinking skills - all of which will be crucial to their success in college, andin whatever career they choose. This year’s test will also see a format that uses each student’s time more wisely. Based on feedback from last year’s test takers, PARCC will be consolidated into one testing window instead of two, and can be administered in less overall time. The data from the exam is a huge help to our teachers and principals, as the results provide a path to increase student growth. For those children who are struggling, PARCC data provides guidance on the areas where they need extra support, and helps teachers know which students are ready for a greater challenge. It’s also a powerful tool in revealing achievement gaps, with results serving as the basis for providing all students with the equal resources they deserve. CPS views PARCC as a necessary tool for making sure students stay on track and receive the supports they need. PARCC testing is mandatory for CPS students. As our testing window gets closer, you may hear people talk about not participating. Please know that refusing to participate in PARCC may have big implications that are important for parents tounderstand. Student refusal is damaging in two ways: not only does it mean less significant results for principals and teachers to utilize as they develop curriculum, but it incurs a financial consequence for our district. If less than 95% of CPS students take the exam, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the U.S. Department of Education can withhold hundreds of millions of dollarsin funding. This is particularly challenging given our current financial condition – and will mean even fewer resources dedicated to teaching and support positions, as well as programs that support student learning. As you prepare your student(s) for their PARCC exam, know that there are a wealth of resources online to help guide you. From information our own site (www.cps.edu/parcc) to resources at the national level (www.illinoistestguide.organd www.bealearninghero.org), we encourage you to explore and use asneeded. We firmly believe in PARCC as a tool that empowers our principals and teachers. The data provided to our district from the test allows for more accurate analysis and adjustment, in turn allowing them to better support and prepare our students. As always, we thank you for your active involvement in your child’s education, as well as our district - and look forward to sharing the next round of PARCC results later thisyear.

Best,

Janice K. Jackson, Ed.D Chief Education Officer

Dear CPS Families,

As you may have heard, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) has declared a “Day of Action” on April 1, 2016. While there are still unanswered questions about what this day will look like, we know that CTU leadership has proposed an illegal one-day strike, asking teachers to leave their classrooms empty and take to the streets. To explain this divisive action, CTU President Karen Lewis asked teachers and families to think of this one-day strike as “an extra holiday.” This uncertainty has caused confusion and concern, and as a parent, you have a right to know whether there will be school that day and how to plan. We take our responsibility to our students and their families very seriously. We will know more after the CTU House of Delegates votes on the strike on March 23, 2016. Between now and then, we will evaluate how to best provide a safe environment for our students and will consider the best course of action once we have all of the information. To understand all your options on April 1, we encourage you to speak with your childcare provider and employer to create any necessary contingency plans. In addition, we know that regular communication is crucial. To stay in touch, please sign up for our new mailing list at cps.edu/signup. This won’t replace the other ways you receive updates from us, but it is another reliable way to make sure information gets directly to you, in real time. As always, we thank you for your support and for joining with so many principals, teachers, and other CPS staff in prioritizing your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Forrest Claypool - Chief Executive Officer

Dear Prussing Families,

Due to high winds today, at approximately 12:30 p.m. there was a neighborhood power outage and Prussing School was affected by it. The school temporarily lost power for approximately 45 minutes. The electric company was contacted, and the problem was immediately repaired. Power was restored at approximately 1:15 p.m. The student schedules were not disrupted and the school has full power. We just wanted to reassure you that all students are fine. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Chipain

February 16, 2016

Dear Prussing Families,

As you read in the letter from our CPS leaders, representatives of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) are organizing “walk-ins” at schools across the city tomorrow – including one at Prussing School.

http://prussingelementary.org/sites/default/files/WalkIn%20Letter.pdf

http://prussingelementary.org/sites/default/files/WalkIn%20Letter%20Span...

While I believe in the right of every member of our school community to express themselves, I must balance that with the safety of our students.  In this case, that means balancing the right of CTU supporters to gather and enter our school, with the fact that those supporters may include individuals unknown to the CTU organizers or our school community.

After conversation with the Prussing School walk-in organizers, I believe attendance will be large enough to warrant limiting access to our building tomorrow morning.  This is not done lightly, but in order to ensure the safety of our students, only students, teachers, and parents accompanying their PreK – 2nd students will be allowed entry.

I want to be clear that these limits will only be in place for tomorrow morning (Wednesday, February 17th) – after-school pick up will occur as normal, as will drop-offs and pick-ups moving forward.

If you have concerns or questions about your student(s), please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your understanding, and commitment to keeping Prussing School safe.

February 11, 2016

Dear Prussing Families,

Many of you have been listening to the news regarding CPS and its continued budget concerns, and I wanted to inform you on how these cuts will impact us at Prussing School. On Tuesday, principals from throughout the city were presented with mid-year budget cuts, an unprecedented event in CPS history. The most important news is that because we have been planning throughout the year, we are going to be able to maintain all positions for the rest of the year and ensure that classroom impacts are as minimal as possible.

I do not want to minimize the situation, because these cuts were significant. Overall, CPS school budgets were reduced by 4.875%. Our total net reduction at Prussing was over $81,000. In essence, this short-fall wipes out much of our reserves. This type of emergency is why we kept reserve funds in the first place.

I want to thank our Local School Council for helping plan for this day from the day we received our budget last year. Their trust and suggestions helped us meet this hardship.

We have been working with our school stakeholders to identify strategies to cover this impact. As parents, I would like to assure you that we are working hard to maintain the same level of excellence and opportunities that you are accustomed to at Prussing School.

What does this mean for us? We are trying hard to make sure that you do not notice a difference. I want to assure you - Our Fine Arts and World Language programs will continue; our After-School academic and social programs will continue, and we will try to maintain and expand our support for teachers in the classroom. At Prussing, we have been fortunate, but more importantly we have also been proactive. As always, we appreciate your support and trust.

There will be a Special Local School Council (LSC) meeting tomorrow, Friday, February 12th at 3:30 p.m. to discuss the CPS budget cuts on our school budget and programming schedule. We welcome you to attend this special LSC meeting. If you do have questions, please feel free to reach out to any of the administrative staff. http://prussingelementary.org/sites/default/files/LSC%20special%20agenda...

Dear Prussing Families,

Please read the following communication from Mr. Forrest Claypool and Dr. Janice Jackson.   http://prussingelementary.org/sites/default/files/012916_Letter_To_Paren...

Dear Families,

As we approach the second semester, we wanted to take this opportunity to address the news you might have seen in recent days. Over the past 24 hours, there has been increasing coverage of our negotiations with the Chicago Teachers’ Union (CTU), as both parties have acknowledged that we are making progress toward agreement. These conversations are the product of negotiations on a serious multi-year proposal that would ask both the CTU and CPS to share in the solution to our fiscal challenges. This proposal would prevent mid-year layoffs, preserve class sizes, and prioritize what is most important to everyone involved: the gains your children make every day. While work remains to finalize any contract, the CTU leadership announced that they’ll take the next step in that process, with a preliminary vote on Monday. We remain cautiously hopeful about the outcome and appreciative of the CTU’s willingness to thoughtfully consider this offer and be part of the solution. Reaching agreement with our teachers is a crucial step in protecting our classrooms, and in closing the $480 million budget gap we face this year, as well as making progress towards our larger $1.1 billion deficit next year - and we’ll continue to keep you updated as progress is made. Thank you again for all you do for our schools.

Sincerely,

Forrest Claypool, Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Janice K. Jackson, Chief Education Officer

November 24, 2015

Dear Prussing parents and staff:

Thank you for hosting me at your school earlier this month. I am deeply sorry for what all of you went through – parents, teachers, staff and most importantly, children. I apologize on behalf of the Chicago Public Schools. What happened at Prussing was unacceptable, and CPS has taken steps to prevent another incident like it, both at your school and throughout the district.

I listened closely, and heard loud and clear the actions you asked us to take. Today, CPS is committing to several of the actions you requested.

First, we will be providing your school community with a permanent, full-time engineer.

Second, we will install a new boiler.

Designing, bidding, awarding, manufacturing and installing a new boiler normally takes a year, but we will take every step to ensure the new boiler is operational before the next school year.

In the meantime, the existing boilers will undergo frequent inspections. The City’s Building Department has agreed to inspect the boilers monthly. They conducted an initial inspection, noting that the boilers are in working order.

We are also investigating other potential changes to improve the temperatures and comfort of your children and the school staff. In the meantime, the engineer will also work closely with the administration and make any necessary manual adjustments to keep temperatures on both floors comfortable.

Among the measures we have already taken on the boiler:

  • Replacing regulators on both boilers
  • New regulator vent piping and a new burner motor
  • Repairs to gas piping
  • Boiler tune ups to both boilers
  • New kill switches at the barometric damper on the flue
  • Replacing boiler room unit heater
  • Replaced the fire door

Across the District, we are also putting in place additional safeguards.

  • We are adding approximately 5,000 carbon monoxide detectors to all of our schools.
  • We are enhancing our existing protocol for building engineers, implementing audit procedures to ensure that required monthly inspections of facilities are documented.
  • We have worked with the Chicago Police and Fire departments, along with our principals, to improve how parents are notified in the event of a medical emergency or school evacuation.

Nothing is more important than the safety of your children. Please expect to hear from us regularly with updates on the progress we are making at Prussing, including information about when work is being conducted on the system.

Sincerely,

Forrest Claypool

CEO, Chicago Public Schools

CPS Budget Deficit Udpate:

As parents and educators, we have the same goals for our students: to get a quality education, in a safe and comfortable school, with dedicated, inspiring, and caring teachers. Our school strives towards reaching those goals every day – and even in the face of challenges, we’ve made great progress towards them.

Our progress is now in jeopardy. Our school district, Chicago Public Schools (CPS), is facing a $480 million dollar budget shortfall that will have consequences on our staff and class size beginning next year if no action is taken. We need your help - this problem can’t be solved without you.  Our elected leaders in Springfield are the ones who will decide whether or not funding will come through.  For years, Springfield has cut education funding - asking you as a taxpayer to do more and giving your kids less. Now they must decide if they’ll provide CPS with needed relief in the form of $200 million in pension costs and increased education funding across the state -- or whether they’ll continue to treat Chicago’s students unfairly.

As parents and educators, we cannot fully focus on the needs of our students with continued financial instability that upends our schools.  It’s time we let Governor Rauner and our elected representatives know that we need them to treat Chicago students fairly, by funding Chicago schools and teacher pensions as they do for the rest of the state. Your voice – as a taxpayer, a voter, and a parent – is so critical for our leaders to hear.  Please take a minute to visit cps.edu/takeaction, where you’ll find resources to help you speak up for our community.

Finally, Prussing's School Quality Ratings Report (SQRP) for 2015 has been released. We are happy to announce that Prussing is a Level 1 school in Good Standing. You can find the report at this link: http://prussingelementary.org/sites/default/files/2015_SQRP_Summary_6101...

Sincerely,

Dr. Chipain

Dear Prussing Families,

Happy Veterans Day! Today, the Local School Council has announced a Special Local School Council meeting that will be held on Monday, November 16th at 6:00 p.m. in the school auditorium. Chicago Public Schools CEO, Forrest Claypool, is scheduled to be present at the meeting and will provide an update regarding the Carbon Monoxide Evacuation that occurred on October 30th.   http://prussingelementary.org/sites/default/files/LSC%20special%20agenda...

There are now 8 carbon monoxide detectors in the school that will alert school officials.  There are two at the end of each corridor in the main building, one carbon monoxide detector at the entrance of the lunchroom across from the main office, two combo carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in the boiler room and a combo carbon monoxide and smoke detector at the end of the tunnel that runs underground. The placement of these detectors ensures that school officials will be notified if carbon monoxide is detected in the school again. I will be happy to show parents the placements of these detectors in the main building, after school has been dismissed.

Also, as of this time, the Facilities Department of CPS has not yet scheduled for a tour of the boiler system. I will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Dr. Chipain

Dear Prussing Community,

I would like to thank everyone for your support over the last few days. I would also like to acknowledge the people who were able to come to Prussing’s Local School Council meeting last night to voice their concerns and also give their support regarding Friday’s evacuation.

In addition, I want to thank you for your patience and cooperation in making Friday’s evacuation as smooth as possible. We’re grateful for the quick response from paramedics, who immediately arrived at the school and treated those with symptoms. We'd like to report that all of our students and staff are doing well.

The school’s boiler is required to have an annual inspection, and the boiler passed inspection on July 22, 2015. We have determined that the gas regulator was not operating properly and it has been repaired. We will continue to provide information as we are able to.

Eight carbon monoxide monitors have been placed throughout the school and an engineer is scheduled to be at the school all week. A letter was sent home yesterday with the students that provided an update on the status at Prussing http://prussingelementary.org/sites/default/files/11.02.15%20prussing%20...

For those of you whose children were transported to the hospital, we will work with you to help you understand next steps. The school will file an incident report, which will generate a claim letter that we will provide to you. Additional instructions will be provided to you on how to submit your claim.

Again, we want to assure you that your children’s safety will always be our top concern, and we will continue to update you as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Dr. Chipain

Dear Parents,

Please see the link about the information on the Prussing After-School All-Star Program.

Thank you.

November 2, 2015

Dear Prussing Parents:

Making sure that your children have a safe and welcoming environment where they can learn is a top priority for all of us.

I want to thank you all for your patience and cooperation in making Friday’s evacuation as smooth as possible. We’re grateful for the quick response from paramedics, who immediately arrived at school and treated those with symptoms. We'd like to report that all of our students and staff are doing well.

I’m writing to inform you of what we know about the conditions that led to Friday’s carbon monoxide leak, as well as the immediate steps that we are taking to ensure the safety of your children.

The school’s boiler is required to have an annual inspection, and the boiler passed inspection on July 22, 2015. We have determined that the gas regulator was not operating properly and it has been repaired. We will continue to provide information as we are able to.

Two carbon monoxide detectors will be placed on each floor in the hallways. Engineers were on site during the weekend to make sure that everything is functioning properly. Two engineers were on site today (Monday), and we will have an engineer in the building all week.

Dear Prussing Community,

Prussing Elementary School will be open for school on Monday at normal hours.

As you know, on Friday, Prussing was evacuated due to elevated carbon monoxide levels in the building. We'd like to report that all of our students and staff are doing well, and we will be placing two carbon monoxide monitors on every floor of the school. Engineers were in the school over the weekend to make sure everything is functioning properly. We will also have two engineers at the school Monday, along with the Facility Manager.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we worked through this issue on Friday, and we will continue to update you with additional information as it becomes available. Our highest priority will continue to be making sure your children have a safe and welcoming environment where they can learn. Thank you.

Dear Prussing Community:

Earlier today, Prussing was evacuated due to elevated carbon monoxide (CO) levels in the building. Prussing students have been relocated to Smyser Elementary, 4310 N. Melvina Ave. If you have not made other arrangements, please plan to pick your child up at Smyser at 3:15pm.

Numerous personnel from the Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Police Department, Chicago Public Schools, and Alderman Arena were all on site to help with the management of the situation. Please know that at all times, our absolute first priority was the immediate health and safety of Prussing students.

About 80 students and staff were transported to area hospitals today for precautionary purposes. We know how difficult this day has been for students and parents and we are continuing to work through the afternoon on managing the situation.

As of right now, we expect that school will be open on Monday. If this information changes we will notify parents as soon as possible.

We appreciate your patience as we have worked through the situation today, and we will update you with additional information as it becomes available.

One form per family is all that is required. If you feel this does not apply to you based on income, please still fill it out and put N/A in part 4 of the form. If you need a form, please contact the office and we will be glad to provide an additional form.

Curriculum and Instruction

New math program from Kindergarten through eighth grade aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

New science program for middle school students aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Six brand new Chromebook carts that contain 150 new Chromebooks dedicated for student learning.

Dance art will replace the visual art program. We plan to have visual art integrated with regular classroom instruction and also have after school visual art opportunities for our students.

Regarding our World Language Program, students from grades K-6 will be taught 3 different exploratory language programs. Each quarter, students will explore the introductory language and cultures of Italian, French, and Spanish. We will conclude the year with an additional quarter of French, which will aide the students with tying together what they learned from each exploratory session and make connections between those Latin based languages. Additionally, we will connect the exploration of Italian, French, and Spanish back to English, which has a base of 60% of Latin origins. In the 7th and 8th grades, students will experience a more intensive study of the French language. Students will work with traditional language textbooks, as well as, interactive web-based programs. The students will engage in French twice a week in standard language instruction; switching each quarter with library/media to allow all 7th and 8th grades to be serviced; and as a means to reinforce skills learned. During the non-instructional quarters, students will work with web-based language programs under the direction of the Library/Media Instructor. Please see the letter that follows this update from our World Language teacher, Ms. Moore, for a more detailed explanation and rationale for our World Language changes.

Dr. George Chipain

Principal

Dear Prussing Families and Community Members,

The start of the 2015-2016 school year marks many changes, and we are pleased to share innovative plans for enlivening the foreign language program. After over ten years of once a week French instruction, it is time to re-engage our students in the study of foreign language. Our goals revolving around capturing the interest and excitement of the students as we transition towards a more academic French program in the upper grades. This structuring will prepare our students to enter high school with a solid foundation of French as a foreign language, as well as, exploratory exposure to other romance languages.

Starting in the fall, students from K-6 will be taught 3 different exploratory language programs.

Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to supplement their study of French with a weekly interactive after-school program.

We are excited to explore this new structure of exposing students to cultural awareness, as well as, obtaining a more comprehension understanding of world language. We will utilize all resources to incorporate authentic experiences for all grades; connecting via Skype with peer classes from all around the world; inviting students and community members to participate in French film nights; and with cooking demonstrations. We understand that while many of our students already have some Spanish language skills, the exploratory quarter of Spanish would allow the students to connect their oral language with written language and offer a chance to lead in group-learning activities.  We are excited to present an opportunity for all students to share their experiences in learning a new language, a tool that will serve them well as in becoming college and career ready.

Thank you,

Melissa Moore
